Abhyasa's Quest at I.F.B, Lucknow

Good experiences are very rare and rarer they do come across at an early stage of our life. And one such experience came along disguised as the first international festival of Bio-Technology, hosted by City Montessori School, Lucknow. The festival was organized under the name of “Quest-09” from the 3rd of August, 2009.

It is a matter of immense pleasure and pride that a team of six students headed by Mrs.Sreelatha, Senior Biology Teacher, was selected to represent Abhyasa. The festival, in which 123 schools from 14 nations were invited, held a host of competitions and witnessed speeches by eminent scientists.

“The Quest” was declared open by the honourable former president of our nation, Dr.A.P.J.Kalam. In his inaugural address he enlightened the students about the topic that is close to his heart – “Bio-Technology”. Dr. Kalam emphasized on the role of today’s youth in expending the realms of this recent development. The great man spoke how other seriously expanding technologies, Nano-Technology and informatics, are intermingling with bio-technology. He expressed that we are discovering new horizons of scientific development and the key of the enhancement is in the young hands. His speech left all the young souls inspired and evoked, triggering a new zeal to excel in the forthcoming competitions.

Mr.Jagadish Gandhi from City Montessori Schools, Luknow, addressed the gathering to convey the message for world peace and global unity. He also stated that spirit of world peace could be inculcated at the schooling stage for the betterment of the world.

Another mind boggling aspect of the Quest was its competitions ranging from web-designing to collage, and from debate to quiz, the Quest had it all. The list of the activities in the Quest, contained – Debate, Seminar, Website Designing, Quiz, PowerPoint Presentations, Collage, Poster Making and Slogan Writing. The competitions were designed keeping in mind, to test both the intellectual as well as the creative part of the participants. The awesome global nature of it, altogether adds the much needed touch of competition.

Apart from all these scintillating features of this festival, one can never forget the amazing universe of knowledge put forth by the galaxy of eminent scientists present there. Some of the excellent speeches were made by Dr.D.Balasubramaniam who touched the complex concepts of Bio-Technology in a nutshell, Dr.Rakesh Tuli on “What Makes Us Human” and Dr.Nitya Anand who addressed the issues of Biotechnology and Healthcare.

The crux of the whole matter being, “The Quest 09” was a one in a million experience which was thoroughly experienced by team Abhyasa. They returned with a worthy experience, precious knowledge and zeal to……. EXCEL.

Annual Adieu to Lord Ganesha

The campus echoed with the slogans “Ganapathi Bappa Moriya…. Aadha Laddu Khaliya….”.. It was a festive occasion at Abhyasa on 31.08.2009 where the little ones cheered for the Lord and gave him a pleasant adieu for the year. It all started on 23.08.2009 – on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, when a group of selected students from each class sat to turn a lump of mud into sacred form of Lord Ganesha. By the end of the day there were 7 idols each in different poses and sizes, which filled the dais in the prayer hall on the campus. This is the practice taken up by Abhyasites for years together to save the environment from becoming a dump of plaster of paris Ganeshas. On the same day pooja was performed to all those idols amidst the chanting of Ganesh Gayatri apart from Abhishekam. Since then for a period of 9 days daily pooja was performed and it was on Monday, the 31st August 2009 – time had come to bid adieu to those eco friendly Ganeshas.

After a long Hom performed for Lord Ganesha, the stage was set for the immersion. Energy emanated enthusiasm ounted to its peaks and the devout Abhyasites started for the event of Lord Ganesha’s farewell for the year.

Amidst the holy Vedic chanting, Bhajans, slogans and drum beats all the Ganesha idols, safely and majestically, placed on the palanquins, were lifted off. We are sure, that Lord Ganesha enjoyed the ride on the shoulders of the students who became servants of the Lord Himself. The procession was led by 5 Human Ganeshas blessing all the passers by, followed by the groups of students religiously involved in Vedic Chanting, Bhajans. Slogan shouting, dancing, distributing prasadam etc.,

The procession reached the Toopran Lake by about 6.30 p.m and as the Sun sets the idols of Lord Ganesha were immersed amidst the chantings, ” Ganapathi Bappa Moraya…. Pudchya Varshi Lavkar Yaa..”, ” Ek Laddu phutla, Ganapati Bappa Uthala…”

Teacher's Day

Teachers’ Day has a touch of perfect tradition where the students perform Paada Pooja to their Gurus seeking their blessings. This is done to imbibe the culture of obedience towards Guru and also to revive the dying traditions.

It was at the evening session when the celebrations began. All the teachers were invited to the Priyanka’s Play Field on the campus. The students in order to test the agility and the alertness of their Gurus conducted a small game before starting Paada Pooja. Every teacher had to identify his nametag stuck on the chair within 5 minutes. Mind you… all teachers proved themselves to be in perfect shape. After the completion of Paada Pooja the programme continued with presentations to all the staff members along with
certificates of appreciation to a selected few for their consistent work and achievement.

Then followed the fun–filled activities. It was joyful to watch Teachers playing games over the stage conducted by the students. Games like – The Numbers Game, The Freeze, Count the Trampled Tomatoes etc., were the highlights of the programme. Of course, nothing can beat the dance performances presented by the students to entertain the staff.

Did we forget something? Yes. We did. The students decorated the dining hall beautifully transforming the whole ambience and inviting the staff for a special lunch. The students personally served every member till they were sure that all the bellies were full.

Founder's Day

It was colours, claps and cakes on the 06th of September 2009 on the campus as the day being the Founder’s day – the birthday of Princi, Mr.Vinaayaka Kalleetla. The student motorcade that took the Princi around took him all over the campus staring from the Temple. As the motorcade came to a halt, he was brought down on his feet so that they can step on the rhythms played by the heavy drums and the joy is immense in all those who shared a step with him. The dancing stopped only because the drummers were tired, not the Abhyasites.

It was in the afternoon, the birthday of Sreemathi Padmavathi Kalletla, on whose land, the Abhyasa buildings stand, was celebrated. The students performed a dance for her on the popular keertana “Muddugaare Yashoda….”..of Sree Annamacharya followed by cake cutting.

During the evening snacks time the Princi personally distributed sweets to all the Abhyasites, from security to students and from staff to workers.

In the evening there was a programme at Priyanka’s Playpen organized by the students, which witnessed dances, fun games and songs, and ramp walks. It was a pleasant surprise for many to see “Vinayaka.com” – the personal site of Princi launched on the occasion.

The class 9 batch of students who conducted the whole programme took the opportunity to announce their batch name – ARDENT – as always the custom at Abhyasa.

End of the day – 6th September 2009 scripted new experiences in the dairy of Abhyasa, which were so legibly written in everyone’s heart.

Commerce Activity Rocks The Campus On 06.12.2009

“Your friend is the person, who knows all about you, and still likes you”. It is the unique feeling and emotion – whatever we name it; it is the bond that constructs healthy relationship among all humans, irrespective of caste, creed and religion. It is a distinct religion whose language is globally accepted. It is nothing but the Friendship that makes all the impossible – possible. Abhyasa inculcated all these feelings by celebrating the Friendship day, 8th of August, 2010 wherein, the Activity Management had made the day a special one for the students. After the busy Sunday schedule– the students gathered at Anubhav – the Amphitheatre at 6.00 p.m for the programme.

Two stunning performances made the atmosphere bubbly and the fun began. Best friend pairs were identified among students. A balloon game was played where in one of the pair would collect the balloons with his/her mouth and the other one bursts the same. The team which bursts the maximum numbers within a minute would stand as the winner. Followed by another interesting programme, “How well do you know your friend?” – 5 different questions were asked to each of the pairs to identify how well do they know about their best friends. The questions were based on the likes and dislikes of the buddies. Lined up, there were hilarious jokes narrated by some students. Last but not the least, it was the speech of Master D.Sai Ram that attracted everybody and gave the message of real friendship. The programme ended with all the students celebrating the friendship by tying the friendship bands to their friends.

SA MEMARABLE VISIT TO BOMMALA KOLUVU ON VIJAYADASHIMI DAY

On Vijayadashimi day ,17th October, fourteen students of Abhyasa’s first batch of IGCSE students along with Mr.Vinaayaka Kalleetla,Our beloved Principal,Mr.CVK Sastry,Vice Principal and Mrs.Sita ,our Craft teacher went to witness the Bommala Koluvu in the mansion of Srimati Jamuna Ramana Rao ,the Deon of South Indian cinema ,AT Banjara Hills. A variety of traditional toys were arranged beautifully and in mind boggling order . It revived the cultural heritage of India .There were seven steps in which various toys were kept in the order from common man to celestial beings and finally to God .In fact in one of the sections the Ramayana was depicted with various events. The arrangement was not only to portray the tradition of India but also portrayed the Gods of Thailand, the western world and so on .

There was also a place, which supported through toys the environmental protection and showed how we are destroying the environment with mindless construction activity. It showed how urbanization is destroying the traditional farming system in India. Overall it was a trip to remember and really hats off to Srimati Jamuna garu for giving us a great opportunity to witness her Bommala koluvu.

Another interesting thing that we noticed was every one in the house had participation in the bommala koluvu, right from the 5 year old Grandson to 80 year old Grandpa. Some of the toys have been preserved for over six decades…and they look very bright and fresh. Few snaps taken by us:

A VISIT TO OLD AGE HOME

One of the major activities undertaken by the Student Gram Seva (Community Service) Management Committee is a visit to an old age home which Abhyasites look forward to, since they get an opportunity to touch the lives of the older generation. These little kids joined them for a day at the home for the aged at Narsapur as Abhyasites believe in the dictum, ‘Hands That Serve, Are Holier Than Lips that Pray’.

They distributed a cake, fruits and shawls to all of them. It was quite heartening the way the kids were received by the old. All students sung Bhajans for them and entertained them with excellent songs and mesmerizing dances. The expression on the countenance of the inmates of the Home, testifies their joy when the little ones had shown such a kind of concern towards them. All the team had returned to campus with mixed feelings.

INSPIRING YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS FROM ABHYASA AT ISB

It was claps, applauds and compliments for all the 14 Abhyasites along with the other participants who participated at the “Inspiring Young Entrepreneurs Work Shop” conducted in collaboration with Butterfly Fields from India and Camp BizSmart from US at the renowned international B‐School “ISB – Indian School of Business”. Thanks to the (Ex) Abhyasites Master Aashish and Master Abhishek who have passed on the information to Abhyasa that such kind of workshop has been organized.

The things moved very fast from Abhyasa, as usual. After the announcement in the Assembly, there was good response from all the students. As per Mr.Anantharajan, Vice‐President, Butterfly Fields – “Abhyasa is the only school that has sent 37 applications when compared to all the other schools in the twin cities” – this itself shows how concerned Abhyasa is towards her wards’ education. Hence Abhyasa could get 14 seats out of the restricted 48 seats for the workshop. This is another achievement – 30% of the seats in the workshop were allotted to Abhyasa itself. All the selected students were called for a meeting a day in advance and were explained the dos and don’ts of the workshop.

“It is heartening to see such a colourful uniform” – was the first comment from Mr.Sarat Chandra, CEO, Butterfly Fields. All the Abhyasites, formally dressed coolly walked into the workshop with all their Laptops and Headsets getting ready for the SKYPE meetings to be conducted for 5 days with the US team. Lo, their performance was too good and everybody appreciated about their behavior and team‐building skills. “I have never seen such a kind of students – they are unique when compared to other participants. They don’t make noise, they are never fussy and posses good interpersonal skills” – said all the facilitators of the workshop. All these comments demonstrate what Abhyasa is.

The gist of the 5 day workshop was as follows:

Day 1 – Formation of 8 teams – Team Building Activities (Construction of Paper Towers) – Importance of Effective Communication in life – Ice Breakers – Creative Thinking – Team Role Descriptions (Chief Executive Officer, Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Sales Officer and Chief Promotion Officer) – Definition of Team Goals – Projects, Goals and Constraints – Dinner.

Day 2 – Entrepreneurship Quiz & Review – Presentation of cases of Club One and Butterfly Fields – Where do ideas come from – Exercise 20 ways to use a product – Brainstorming and Affinity Analysis – Prioritizing top 3 ideas – Peer focus groups – Peer presentations and feedback – Videos of Steve Jobs launching the iPad – Dinner

Day 3 – Entrepreneurship Quiz & Review – Customer requirements, Features, Advantages and Benefits, Affinity Analysis, Market Research, Market Plan, scope, cost and schedule, Market trends, Market literacy quiz – Dinner.

Day 4 – Entrepreneurship Quiz & Review – Logo design examples and tips – Presentation Coaching – guidelines for Logo design – Dinner.

Day 5 – Entrepreneurship Quiz & Review – Presentation Coaching – Online presentations to US judges through SKYPE – presentations to winners – Dinner.

On Day 5, Dr.Micheal E.Gibbs, Founder and C.E.O of CampBizSmart, USA spoke to students and judged their presentations.

When it came to winning the events, Abhyasa left its mark. The team lead by Miss Apoorva Ghale as C.E.O (Class X IG) emerged as winner and the facilitator for this team was Master Aashish- an (Ex) Abhyasite. The team which was facilitated by Mr. Dasaradhi (Dean of Academics- Abhyasa) got a surprise – the student team leader got the best C.E.O of the event. All the students were given away the graduation certificates for completing the 5 day workshop successfully. Team Abhyasa has scripted yet another success story!!! Thanks to all the parents who co-operated and sent their wards to the workshop and all other members who have made this workshop a wonderful event. Let us have some glimpses of the workshop…

Mrs. Farida Tempal expressed that students also can make a change by simple means in their daily life in the following manner:

  • Using bicycles for short distance, encouraging parents to use car pooling, using public transport, using energy efficient CFC bulb, etc.
  • To bring the awareness among the shopkeepers regarding usage of plastic bags, children can sensitize the parents in returning the plastic bags and instead demand for paper bags.
  • Avoid using “use and throw” articles like disposal plates, disposal cups and disposal glasses. Always keep an own water bottle, refill it, reuse it in place of disposal bottles.

She inspired the participating school managements to adopt sustainable measures like greening campus, recycling waste through vermi‐compost, conserving energy and water by following Recycling, Reuse, and Reduce (3R’s) attitude.

“Recycling of used newspaper by paper bag making and distributing in market” activity undertaken by Abhyasa was lauded by the Regional Director Mrs. Farida Temple.

Impressed by this activity, she announced her wish to implement it in Adilabad Tribal Area by supplying newspaper and training tribals to make paper bags and earning livelihood through the activity. She also informed the participants that she would highlight this activity of Abhyasa at WWF National Meet in New Delhi.

She proclaimed that this project of Abhyasa Residential School is going to be a representation of A.P. state in the WWF National Meet at New Delhi.
