Youth Assembly of India

The idea of the Youth Assembly of India came into existence after Abhyasa received the UN Youth Excellence award in 2007. Subsequently, in the year 2008, 10 students of the school attended the Global Young Leaders Conference at Washington DC and New York in which students from 100 countries participated and Abhyasa students were also invited to attend the swearing-in Ceremony of the President of the United States –Mr. Barack Obama in January 2009.

The Youth Assembly is basically a conglomeration of youngsters in school and colleges that is involved in social service activities. Most Youngsters in India are often attracted to lucrative careers in Engineering, Medicine, and Finance etc. or towards celebrated professions in Media, Sports, and Cinema. The youth that is engaged in Social Entrepreneurship and Social Service is hardly recognized by society or in media. Abhyasa School decided to celebrate the success of social entrepreneurs involved in social service for the needy and the downtrodden. The Youth Assembly of India was started in September 2008 and aims to reach out to as many number of schools and colleges in India and initiate the formation of social service groups in colleges and University campuses. The objective is to not only sensitize the youth between the age group of 15 to 25 years to take up social responsibility but also recognize them and celebrate their service.

During the first Assembly in 2008, as many as 2000 youngsters from various parts of the country participated. The eminent speakers motivated the youth to commence their own social service clubs in school and colleges. The climax to the two-day deliberations was the session on “My Role in Making A Difference to Others” and the declaration of the “Youth Manifesto” of Hyderabad. It was heartening to note that 20 clubs were formed by the end of two-day Youth Assembly of India and the participants went back to their schools and colleges and initiated various activities in their respective cities.Youth Assembly of India

Subsequently, the Director and Founder Principal Mr. Vinaayaka Kalleetla – made an inspiring short film “A Journey from Me to We” and went around showing this film in many schools and colleges to sensitize youngsters towards social responsibility. The film sensitizes the youth to the face that, real recognition comes from empowering others, while the present day youth are too preoccupied with themselves and their success alone. Entertainment and Fun is a major preoccupation among the urban youth in India and the film implores the youth to “Enjoy – but also share your Joy” with people who need joy in their lives. Abhyasa then announced the Youth Achievement Awards – 2009 – when the Second Youth Assembly of India was hosted by Abhyasa in October 2009 at Hyderabad City. Various youth organizations, NGOs and Individuals participated and presented their service activities at the assembly. The young and dynamic Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Mr. N. Kiran Kumar Reddy was personally present to inspire the youth and present the Youth Achievement Awards to youngsters who were making a difference to their society. The awards carried citations and prize money ranging from Rs. 25,000/- to Rs. 1,00,000/- to celebrate service as the most happening thing among youth.
Mr. Subhash – a visually challenged person, not only graduated and earned a job in Andhra Bank , but also started an NGO named: “Vikalangula Kalyana Vedika” which imparts training skills for visually challenged – without a support of any external agency – in the city of Vijayawada.
Dr. Surya Prakash, who runs “Life Reinforcement Group” – has sacrificed a lucrative medical practice and does charity treatment for the poor in slums of Hyderabad.
Mr. Naga Naresh, who hails from a lower middle class family in West Godavari District, lost both his legs in an accident. He was not stopped by his disability. He made it to IIT – Chennai and has now found lucrative job in Google India at Bangalore. He runs an NGO to spread polio awareness among the village folk of Karnataka State.
Dr. N. Sai Bhaskar, an IITian from Mumbai, could have found a lucrative job with any multinational company in India or abroad. Instead he gave up his job and career to work on eco-friendly stoves to reduce carbon emissions.
The recognition of youngster who were making a difference to people around – without being a part of any renowned organization nor having any resources at their disposal – but yet taking up social responsibility without aspiring for any recognition nor reward- paved way for the participants to acknowledge that one does not need success before hand, to serve others and led to the declaration that more students in colleges would launch social services project at their respective college levels. Each of the participant college now has a recognized and registered social services organization under the umbrella of the Youth Assembly of India.
